I once had a boss who told me to watch Wall Street, the 80's movie with Charlie Sheen.
The reason?
How he dealt with the gatekeeper at the office of his big fish (Gordon Gecko).
What I learned was, the Charlie Sheen character knew all there was to know about Gecko, which gave him some credibility, and that helped. But what he also did, and this was the bigger lesson, was get to know the gatekeeper. Know his/her likes and dislikes, know their birthdates and send a card. Know if they have kids. In short, treat them like your client, and you'll have a better chance at getting through.
